Professional mermaid, Hannah Pearl, has written the second instalment in the children’s picture book series ‘Ruby Rockpool’ to raise awareness of the plight of our oceans and is also raising vital funds for Sea Shepherd UK, with £1 donated from every book sale.
The book titled ‘Ruby Rockpool & The Tangled Whale’ is aimed at three- to six-year-olds and features marine warrior mermaid ‘Ruby Rockpool’, who lives in Teignmouth Bay, Devon.
The story invites young readers to journey with Ruby and her friends as they travel across the world’s oceans to save a blue whale caught in a huge, discarded fishing net known as a ‘ghost net’.
Every year over 640,000 tons of fishing gear is discarded into the oceans, the same as 50,00 London buses. As a result, over 150,00 whales and seals, and 200,000 seabirds are killed by ghost nets every year.
Around the UK this lost and discarded fishing gear is the second-largest source of marine debris with over 1,250 kilometres of nets alone, being lost in UK waters each year.
Sea Shepherd UK is on a mission to combat the issue of discarded fishing gear and in 2018 launched their official ‘Ghost Net Campaign’ to concentrate on known problem areas around UK’s coastal waters and is still an ongoing operation.
This reality was the inspiration for the second book storyline and aims to raise awareness and to help inspire big and little eco-warriors.
This children’s book is filled with ‘shell facts’ about marine life, as well as a serious message about marine conservation from the deep.
Mermaid Hannah Pearl commented: “It’s important to bring awareness to the plight of our oceans to kids and adults, encouraging small changes for big impact. I wanted to spread some mermaid magic and joy to the world, which also included a message of conservation from the deep.”
Mermaid author, Hannah Pearl will be holding several ‘mermaid story time’ events in Bristol including Skyboat Cafe in Redland Bristol on Tues 12 April, Bristol Central Library on Sat 30th April, Knowle Library on Saturday 7th May and Junction 3 Library on Sat 21st May.
A spokesperson from Sea Shepherd commented on the new release: “Written by Sea Shepherd UK’s favourite Mermaid (Hannah) – ‘Ruby Rockpool’ books are fun and colourful with ocean conservation at its heart, educating young readers/future mermaids about the issue of marine debris while inspiring lifestyle changes and care for the ocean to the benefit of marine wildlife worldwide.”
The book retails at £9.95 plus P+P with £1 donated from every book to Sea Shepherd UK.
